James Anderson, M.A., J.D.
Originally from Sudbury, Ontario, I have made Ottawa my home for over a decade for university and then to start my career. I received my Juris Doctor (Cum Laude) from the University of Ottawa and my Master of Arts from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University in 2012. I was called to the Bar of Ontario in 2014.
Before beginning my legal career, I worked with UNESCO in Bangkok, Thailand, where I researched human rights in the context of HIV/AIDS in Southeast Asia among vulnerable high-risk populations. I later worked for Citizenship and Immigration Canada for two years, where I focused on health operational policies, quality assurance, and risk management.
In both my academic and professional life, I am a strong supporter of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) rights, both here in Ottawa and around the world. I have spoken at international conferences on SOGI Rights and HIV prevention, both here in Canada (Quebec City and Toronto), as well as abroad (Thailand and Indonesia). I am also a member of the Safe Landing Fund, a not-for-profit association in Ottawa that helped sponsor and resettle a gay Syrian refugee.
When I am not working, I enjoy traveling, especially in Asia, and love learning new languages. I am functionally bilingual, and I have conversational level Spanish and Japanese. I enjoy graphic design and playing piano.
Since 2015, I have participate with a team of cyclists in the annual MS Bike Ride, where we biked from Ottawa to Cornwall and back (about 200km round trip) raising money for Multiple Sclerosis. I look forward to doing it again in 2019.
As a licensee of the Law Society of Upper Canada, I stand by the following principles:
A recognition of the diversity of the Ontario public;
A recognition that the Law Society is committed to inclusive legal workplaces in Ontario, a reduction of barriers created by racism, sexism, ageism, heterosexism, unconscious bias, and discrimination;
My responsibility as a member of the legal profession is to protect the dignity of all individuals, and to respect human rights laws in force in Ontario; and
An acknowledgement of my obligation to promote equality, diversity and inclusion generally and in my behaviour towards colleagues, employees, clients and the public.

"Hard working, professional (e.g., ethical, transparent, explains things clearly, readily available via email), reasonable fees, pleasant personality, easy to communicate with, and is a socially responsible individual."

"Mr. Anderson will do what is in the best interest of his client and will work selflessly to go out on his own to seek a better solution, if it exists, for the client. Being a US citizen having no idea how things work in transferring a real estate property in Canada I really feel lucky to connect with him to guide me through the entire process during which I felt I had the right guy helping me throughout. I will recommend him to anyone in a heart beat."
